In 1998, interest in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay
led us to the Sonoma Coast area, specifically to the hills near Freestone. In 1999, two properties were purchased and one property was leased, all within the Freestone area. Under an established partnership named New West LLC, development of approximately 100 acres of vineyards on the three properties began in 1999.
Two of the three properties are located along Freestone Flat Road where 19 acres of Chardonnay and 40 acres of Pinot Noir have been planted. The third property is a 90 acre parcel approximately 1/4 mile west of Freestone Flat Road, This vineyard was once known as Quall Hill has since been renamed Quarter Moon Vineyard. The development of 41 acres of Pinot Noir on Quarter Moon was completed in 2001. While all three properties are located within the Sonoma Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA), the two properties situated along Freestone Flat Road are also contained within the smaller, Russian River AVA. Freestone Vineyard Located on Freestone Flat Road off the Bohemian Highway in Freestone, this former dairy farm of 89 acres was purchased in 1999. The vineyard has 34 acres planted in Pinot Noir and 21.7 acres in Chardonnay. Located eight miles inland from the Pacific on the western fringe of the Russian River appellation, the vineyard benefits from cool, foggy mornings, warm afternoons, and cool evenings. Quarter Moon Vineyard Located 500 feet above sea level in the Sonoma Coast appellation in the hills west of Freestone Flat Road, the Quarter Moon Vineyard is 41 acres of Pinot Noir. Situated above the fog line on a south-facing slope in view of the Pacific Ocean, the vineyard receives good sunlight tempered by coastal breezes. Ferguson Vineyard Located near the Freestone vineyard on Freestone Flat Road, this six acres of Pinot Noir is also on the western fringe of the Russian River appellation and receives the same cool, foggy mornings, warm afternoons, and cool evenings as the Freestone vineyard. |
